The partnership solidifies the PS3 system as the most complete home entertainment hub on the market today, allowing consumers to play high-definition games, watch Blu-ray movies, listen to music, view photos, browse the Internet, and download games, movies and TV shows from PlayStation®Network. PS3 system owners will now enjoy an unparalleled experience watching their favorite movies and TV shows streamed instantly from Netflix.

For only $8.99 a month, Netflix members can instantly watch unlimited movies and TV episodes streamed to their TVs and computers via Netflix ready devices such as the PS3 system and can receive unlimited DVDs delivered quickly to their homes.

Watching movies instantly streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system is enabled by an instant streaming Blu-ray disc that is being made available free to all Netflix members. The free instant streaming disc leverages Blu-ray’s BD-Live™ technology to access the Internet and activate the Netflix user interface on the PS3 system, which must be online via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Netflix members simply slide the disc into their PS3 systems to reveal movies and TV episodes that can be watched instantly. Members can use the Netflix Web site or navigate directly on their PS3 systems to add movies and TV shows to their Queues. With the PS3 system’s Wireless Controller, members can choose a movie to watch from their instant Queues or just play directly from any of the lists. People can also search the entire Netflix library, manage both their instant and DVD Queues, and even filter searches by titles that are available to watch instantly. Windows Media Center takes advantage of the Netflix recommended category lists to make it even easier to quickly find the movies and TV shows that consumers want to watch. Conveniently, Netflix in Windows Media Center is also designed to work with any Windows Media Center-compatible remote control.

Engadget did a bang-up job on staging a shootout among Netflix HD streaming devices.  In the test, they compare the following variety of Netflix streaming boxes:

Roku Netflix Player

TiVo HD

Xbox 360

Samsung BD-P2500

LG BD300

They give the image quality nod to the Samsung, but there are so many caveats to each player that it’s tought to call it a clear win.  When you’ve an Xbox 360 sitting around, it’s hard not to take advantage of it and just roll with the free streaming even though the controls are not the greatest in the world.

Just a couple of days after Netflix announced that LG TVs would offer Netflix Instant Streaming, Vizio has jumped on the Netflix bandwagon as well. Look out Comcast and Dish (two services I hate).  Netflix is legitimately vying for a big chunk of the living room.

I already take advantage of the Netflix Instant Streaming capabilities built into the Xbox 360. The best thing about Netflix Instant Streaming is that it doesn’t cost anymore than the service plan that you already have. Just register your Xbox with your Netflix account and, Bam!, you’ve got tons of movies and TV shows at your finger tips.  The integration with actual TVs is just another step into your living room – and it’s one I applaud.

Netflix Announces Partnership With VIZIO to Instantly Stream Movies to New High Definition TVs

Second Direct-to-TV Partnership Announced Prior to 2009 Consumer Electronics Show

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Netflix Inc., the world’s largest online movie rental service, today announced a partnership with VIZIO, the American TV and consumer electronics company based in Irvine, Calif., that will enable consumers to instantly watch movies from Netflix directly on new VIZIO high definition televisions featuring VIZIO’s new “Connected HDTV” Platform.

The announcement, on the eve of the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) taking place here, is the second in three days by Netflix regarding streaming movies directly to an Internet-connected TV without the need for a separate external device. On Monday, Netflix and LG Electronics jointly announced an extension of their year-long partnership to enable Netflix members to instantly watch movies directly on new LG plasma and LCD HDTVs.

VIZIO’s “Connected HDTV” platform is designed to complement TV viewing. At a single touch of the VIZIO customized remote control, viewers can access movies from Netflix from an easy-to-navigate, on-screen display. With built-in wired and wireless networking, VIZIO televisions with the “Connected HDTV” platform will provide true plug-and-play connectivity right out of the box. VIZIO expects to ship the new TVs to retailers nationwide later this year.

Netflix members pay as little as $8.99 per month for unlimited instant streaming and unlimited DVDs from a catalog of more than 100,000 DVD titles in more than 200 genres.

Originally, Columbia titles were pulled without notice, only to later learn that the reasoning was due to some content licensing snafus between Columbia and Netflix.  We hope the Columbia content is here to stay, and here’s to more Instant Streaming!

Those choices will automatically be displayed on members’ TVs and available to watch instantly through the HDTV. Once selected, movies will begin playing in as little as 30 seconds.
